These modern rustic sconces are great budget decor items that won’t take long to make and look stunning. Wooden wall sconces are versatile decor items and can be used for candles, flowers, solar lights and more. I have used mine to hang my solar Mason jars.
Materials for your Mason jar wall sconce
Here are the materials you will need to make your own wall sconce light or vase:
- 2 x 50 cm length of 2.5cm x 10cm (1 x 4 inch) timber,
- Aged white chalk paint,
- Clear finishing wax,
- 2 slotted wall hangers and screws,
- Two decorative rustic wall hooks and screws.
- Two Mason jars or any decorative item to hang from the hooks.
If you are planning to make an outdoor sconce, I would advise to swap out the clear finishing wax for a clear finishing lacquer. The lacquer will protect the wood from the elements more effectively than the wax.
How to make your wall sconce
These are the steps I followed to build the wood wall sconces:
- Cut the wood to the size that will fit the wall space where the Mason jar wall sconce will be hung. Mine is 50 cm long.
- Paint the wood with your choice of chalk paint. I had some aged white chalk paint on hand so I used what I had. If the piece of wood being used has some natural beauty you needn’t paint it at all.
- I love the distressed wood look. To achieve this, sand your wood down by hand or using a sander.
- Finish the wood off with a good coating of clear finishing wax or clear lacquer if your rustic wall sconce is going to hang outside.
- Attach the slotted wall hangers at the back of the distressed wood. It is a lot easier to attach these before attaching the hooks so be sure to do this first.
- Attach the decorative wall hooks to the front of the completed wall sconce. They should be approximately a third of the way down from the top of the sconce and they should be attached upside down.
- Finally, hang the wood sconce on the wall and place the Mason jar on the upside down hook.
It is important to attach the decorative coat hook upside down so that the Mason jar hangs without touching the wood of the sconce. With this in mind, your choice of hook for the sconce is an important one, as it will need a slight lip on the top hook from which to hang the mason jar. See my picks from Amazon for the type of hooks I mean:
If you are not comfortable with hanging the hooks upside down then choose the following wrought iron hooks to achieve a similar look:
