I must say, I take my hat off to Airbnb. In the midst of a pandemic, when no one can travel, Airbnb finds a way to bring travel to your living room. We tried one of the Airbnb online experiences and decided to explore a Bulgarian Winery. This was our take on it.

We spent an hour talking to Stefan from Prisoe Winery in Bulgaria. He in his vineyard close to Varna and us in our Cosy Garden Cottage in Johannesburg.
Stefan shared some of the history of the farm. He is now a second generation wine farmer. A farmer who loves his vines, loves his land and loves his country. I felt he wanted to pull us through the internet to share it with us.

Stefan touched on the wine making process briefly. Insisting that it was too boring to spend too much time on it.
He was unable to hide his excitement about the ‘toys’ (machinery) he got to play with making the wine. This to Stefan was the fun part of making wine.
Reminds me very much of my guitar playing engineer husband. I had a good giggle.
A Passion For Bulgaria
On the next part of our experience Stefan took us on a virtual tour of the Bulgarian wine regions. We could really feel his passion for wine making in Bulgaria. He took us through the many cultivars around the country, some I had never hear of.
Bulgaria has a lot more to offer than just wine. In the central part there is a large rose growing region. They are grown primarily for rose oil.
It sounds like the perfect place for us to visit. My engineer would enjoy tasting the wine. While I would love to touch and smell the roses.
Some of the cities have the most incredible architecture too. I’d love to see all of it.
A Passion for Life
At the end of our online experience I felt I really wanted to explore a Bulgarian Winery in Bulgaria. Stefan’s passion had momentarily transported us out of our lockdown and into the wonders of wine making in Bulgaria.
Stefan had spoken a lot about wine from the different regions around his country. But, it was his parting comments that really stayed with me:
At the end of the day it is important not to get too hung up on the technicalities of how the wine tastes. Or how the wine should taste. It is important to just step back and enjoy the wine in the moment and with the people around you.
I think his parting comment is true about many things in life. We rush from one thing to the next. We bend over backwards making a life we think others would want. In actual fact we need to pause for a moment and just BE.
BE still, BE yourself and BE with the people that matter.
