I don’t know about you but I had all these ideas of doing a whole lot of home DIY during the lockdown. I was also going to write numerous posts about all these projects I had planned. Well here we are five months into lockdown and I bring you my first completed project of turning a reclaimed floating shelf into decorative wall knobs.
I love the idea of turning something old and forgotten into something new. These floating shelves have been gathering dust in our garage. Here is how I converted them into a set of wall knobs for hanging picture frames from.
Materials you will need for your decorative wall knobs
- A piece of reclaimed wood, in this project it was a forgotten floating shelf in my garage.
- Wood oil to clean up your piece of reclaimed wood.
- As many decorative wall knobs as you would like. I had two decorated with birds that fitted in so well with the washstand in my bathroom.
- 2 x slotted wall hangers and screws.
I didn’t need paint in this project as I liked the look of the plain wood of the shelf. There was is a lovely knot that I think adds a bit of character. I did use the oil to clean up the wood and re-seal to protect it from the moisture in the bathroom.
How to attach your decorative wall knobs to the reclaimed floating shelf
- Cut the wood to the size suitable for the place where you would like to hang your decorative wall knobs.
- I gave the wood a really good clean with the wood oil before starting with the holes.
- Attach the slotted wall hangers at the back of the reclaimed floating shelf. It is a lot easier to attach these before attaching the knobs so be sure to do this first.
- Measure and drill the holes through the wood for the wall knobs.
- Place the wall knobs through the holes that you’ve made, place the washer at the back and screw in the until the knob sits in the right position.
- Give your wood another clean with the wood oil.
The set of decorative wall knobs are now ready to be hung on the wall.
Mounting the hooks on the wall
There is such a neat trick to getting the position of the nails in the wall just right to hang your set of decorative wall knobs.
Run a length of masking tape along the back where you attached your slotted wall hangers. The tap must run the full length of the wood and specifically cover the holes in the slotted wall hangers.
Make a pen mark or push a hole through the masking tape where the slots are on the wall hangers. This is to position where your wall nails will need to be on the wall.
Transfer the masking tape to the wall. Level your tape with a spirit level. Your pen marks on the tape will be where you need to drill the holes in the wall.
This little trick works perfectly every time.
What to hang on your decorative wall knobs
I have made my decorative wall knobs specifically to hang some signs up in my Cosy Garden Cottage. The two signs are for the WiFi sign-in information and to let guests know that this Cosy Cottage is committed to clean during the pandemic. I wanted the signs to be both informative and part of the decor.
Other ideas of what to hang from your decorative wall knobs include photos, wreaths, mason jar with a candle. They could also be a bit more functional and used to hang a dressing gown or something such? The possibilities are open to your imagination.
I hope you have found this post useful. Please take a look at some of my other decor projects below. I hope it will be less than five months before I bring you another one!
