The start of 2019 and my husband and I have a huge urge to spring clean our entire home. We have mountains of reclaimed wood in our garage for those ‘just in case we need it’ moments. Well enough is enough we have decided to use it. In this post I describe how we made two beautiful reclaimed wood framed flower pot holders to hang on the garden wall. These will be perfect to decorate our small Cosy Garden Cottage court yard I have listed on Airbnb.
What you will need to make the Reclaimed Wood Flower Pot Holder
These are the tools and supplies we used to make our reclaimed wood flower pot holders.
Tools
- Stanley Mitre Block
- Stanley Mitre Saw
- Star screw driver
- Hammer
Supplies
- Corner Brackets
- Fencing Staples (2.5 x 25mm)
- Chip Board Screws (4mm)
- Reclaimed wood from our garage (25 x 100mm) or (1 x 4inch)
- Reclaimed steel grate from our garage
You can see that the reclaimed items have been sitting in our garage for a while. I am so pleased we have found a use for them. The steel grate used to be the cover for our fish tank. The wood is on it’s third life. It used to be roof trusses and then part of our fish tank and now it is going into our framed flower pot holders. How is that for recycling?
Making the Reclaimed Flower Pot Holders
My engineer/farmer was so excited about this project as it gave him a chance to ‘play’ with his tools. This is how he did it:
- Using the mitre block, cut the wood ends into 45 degree angles.
- Join the four pieces with the corner brackets and chip board screws. Use the star screw driver to screw in the corner brackets to the wood.
- Finally hammer the steel grate to the back of the frame with the fencing staples.
It took about two hours to make two frames. With an electric mitre saw and electric screw driver the job would go much quicker.
Completed Reclaimed Wood Flower Pot Holders
Aren’t they just gorgeous? They are hanging on our boundary wall, just in front of our porch. It is so much nicer sitting and looking onto these instead of the blank wall. The middle flower pot has been hidden in our garage since we moved in over two and a half years ago. It has finally been put to good use too. I have planted some sweet peas behind the petunias. The plan is to let them grow up the steel grate. I’ll be sure to update the post when they are growing too.
Ponono thought the wood off-cuts from the frame made the perfect ‘fairy houses’.
We still have some of the wood and steel grate left to make more frames. They will add a lovely dimension to the courtyard in our Cosy Garden Cottage that we have listed on Airbnb.

So clever, very attractive hanging on the wall.
