With Valentine’s Day coming up I thought I would use the day as a theme to add a little decor to my Cosy Garden Cottage. I love hearts, I could put them up all over my house and what a perfect theme to Valentine’s Day. With hearts in mind I decided to add a little flair to two cushion covers using buttons. The result was these two Valentine Button Heart Cushions and I love them. In this post I am going to share how I did them so you can add a little Valentine’s theme to your home too.
Materials to make the Valentine Button Heart Cushions
To make the Valentine Button Heart Cushions you will need the following materials:
- Two plain colour cushion covers of your choice. Mine were 50cm x 50cm Gurli covers from Ikea in lime green.
- Six packs of mixed craft buttons. I chose red to go with my Valentine theme.
- Two A4 size pieces of adhesive felt. The colour doesn’t matter too much as this goes on the inside of the cushion, but just check the colour you choose doesn’t shine through the cushion cover.
- Sewing Kit.
- Red Thread.
- Pen.
Making the Valentine Button Heart Cushions
Making the Valentine Button Heart Cushion really was not difficult. What was time consuming was sewing all the buttons on.
Here are the steps I took to make the Button Heart Cushion:
1. Cutting the heart shape
To begin draw your heart shape onto the paper at the back of the felt. The size of your heart really depends on how large you want your heart on the cushion. I could fit two of my hearts onto one A4 piece of adhesive felt.
2. Marking the center of your cushion
The felt hearts will be positioned on the inside of the cushion. The inside heart creates a sewing guide that can’t be seen from the outside. The felt heart also helps to keep that part of the cushion stiff so that the design pops out of the cushion.
Turn the cushion cover inside out and use a pen to mark the center of the cushion with a cross. Make the vertical line a little longer so that you can use the bottom tip of the heart to help keep it straight. When drawing your cross keep in mind the position of the cushion zip. I wanted the zips of my cushions to be at the bottom.
3. Positioning the heart in the center of the cushion
Use the cross drawn on the inside of the cushion as a guide to get the heart in a central position. Stick the heart onto the fabric.
Now that the heart is in place you are ready to sew on the buttons.
4. Sewing on the buttons
Sewing the buttons onto the Valentine Button Heart Cushion is easy as pie. Randomly select buttons from the mixed craft button packs and using the a needle from the sewing kit and the red thread sew them into place. Use the inside heart as a guide and sew the buttons around the edge of the heart shape. This is a time consuming step and I didn’t have the luxury of sitting down and sewing them all on at once. Rather, I sewed on a few buttons when ever I had a free twenty minutes here and there and soon the cushions were complete.
